I grew up in Beverly Hills and let me tell you, that was no picnic.
No, the picnic ended in fourth grade when I began drinking Siego diet drinks so I could join the ranks of girls over-focused on outward appearances. After all, wasn’t that the real learning that was taking place, at my famous Beverly Hills High School?
Going to a high school that later would become the focus of a Hollywood TV show, “90210”, says it all! In my years of high school I must have tried dozens of fad diets. Who needed to go to an amusement park when you could just ride the roller coaster of mood swings and fluctuating weight that binge eating and dieting produced? The goal was always the same...get skinny no matter what it takes.
I Felt Like A Player On A Board Game...
Go out to lunch with friends, eat all the carbs possible without “loosing your cookies”. Chase that down with a diet coke so you at least think you've cut some corners. Undo the top button from your uber tight jeans and complain all afternoon about how fat you feel.
Stir up enough drama to motivate yourself to go on a grapefruit diet the next day. Starve yourself except ever so carefully cut around a half a grapefruit and eat a tiny triangular shaped bit once an hour. That night, allow yourself to eat another grapefruit in sections, one section at a time, savouring every morsel.
Do not pass go, do not collect any money (in fact loose more money on faddy dieting schemes)...go straight to dieting jail where you feel really guilty for binging, yet again. Live off the fumes of binge, guilt, remorse, until you get refuelled by the next promising fad diet, only to find yourself back in dieting jail, once again!
The Beginning Of A Revolution: My Passion For Healthy, Sensible Eating
I grew up with a big daddy, I’m talking whopping big. My parents were both born in London and when we moved to the USA when I was four, they were delighted to discover all the new "fast foods". We went from eating scones and clotted cream and fish and chips to McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Swanson TV dinners.
My dad taught us to think about or eat food, almost all the time. If it wasn’t a meal time, it was snack time or tea time or time for a cigarette break. He eventually ate his way to diabetes and colon cancer, and sadly died an obese man.
Then, when my parents divorced and my mom was a single parent, convenient prepackaged foods were a staple. I was raised eating a pathetic man-made diet of fast foods, additives and preservatives.
My Personal Health Implications
Aged ten I was already receiving Demerol injections to combat the debilitating migraines I was suffering. I was constantly sick with all kinds of immune issues.
By the time I was eighteen, I was addicted to nasal spray and nicotine. Next I developed hypoglycemia, where at times I would lose my vision and hearing or even pass out. Sometimes I needed to eat as many as three times in the night just to make it through to morning. I have had Epstein Barr, glandular fever/mono, chronic fatigue, extreme candida and also suffered with severe anxiety attacks.
The Final Straw
Then...(when I was forty), I got poisoned by the off-gassing molecules of oil-based paint. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance, spent six hours on IV and sent home with fistfuls of pills. At times, people had to feed me and I couldn't even open my eyes. For months I could barely make it through each day, each hour, each minute.
I have been amazingly blessed to learn, heal, and come out the other side with vibrant energy and a passion to share what I have learned with others! I knew nothing about creating recipes or writing. I had no role models and simply had to learn how to eat raw foods in order to survive after being poisoned.
I have more than victoriously recovered from all those debilitating illnesses.
By amazing grace, highly focused research, roller coaster trial and errors and hours of creative kitchen episodes, I found my way through the maze of intense body symptoms. Eating a balance of raw and whole cooked foods, and using specific PURE foods: laid the foundation for recovery on a cellular level.
A Tiresome Recovery And A New Found Life
The people who were there, feeding me, caring for me, when I was so ill, saw me slowly eek my way through layers of toxic fallouts, back into the land of the living. When doctors had no solutions, I literally had to pray my way through each day and miraculously was led in the form of insights and impressions that came to me one-step-at a-time.
Slowly: through juicing, carefully implementing specific high nutrient density foods and eating all raw, I began to recover my strength and energy. Recipes seemed to pour forth, filling my head.
I kept being inspired to put together all kinds of RawSome PURE recipes (some all RAW and SOME cooked). The most glorious energy and vitality seemed to be birthed from each new, inspired creation. Along with this came a newly awakened ability to be still and listen to my body. That was what I had to do to recover.
When I got poisoned, my whole endocrine system went on tilt. Sometimes I would feel like my foot was on the gas and brakes simultaneously. My body became hyper sensitive and all kinds of things seemed to set me off causing multiple layers of reactions. I had no tolerance or buffer zone for chemicals in any form. Even foods in various amounts and combinations (too much or too little of certain foods) would create ripples in my ever-shifting equilibrium.
Many days I would attempt to get up and just go for a walk around the block. I would get as far as getting dressed and to the front door. Often, I just couldn’t go any further. I would run out of energy and literally crawl my way back to bed. Sadly, this is a scenario anyone suffering from chronic fatigue can relate too. Sometimes all I could do was lay on my back, look up at the ceiling and pray. As I prayed for total recovery, many things were revealed to me.
Somewhere amidst my silent desperation I sensed a deep intuitive part of myself, emerging. Cloaked in the veil of sheer survival instincts, my “intuitive self” began to have a “sense” about how, when and what I should try, to fuel my wellness.
At first I would get a general sense about things. In time, as I practised listening to and then acting on the cues I received, the directives would get more specific.
There was a point in my recovery, where I was all raw vegan and almost puffed up about being so. Out of nowhere I received a strong intuitive sense to eat a hard boiled egg. It came to me as a factual command.. “Eat a hard boiled egg”.
“Be gone you non vegan apparition from my past”, I pleaded. But the fact remained and turned into a must. “You must eat a hard boiled egg”.
At this point I was very identified with my image as an all raw person and I was convinced that to eat an egg , I would slide down a slippery slope back into the perils of cooked foods (and an animal one at that).
My recovery had come quite a ways at that point, yet I found myself at a plateau unable to get past some tricky blood sugar issues...
Tackling Blood Sugar Issues
I began to notice that often, soon after praying for help or clarity on what next to do, my intuition would be strong, clear and come in the form of a command or fact. Whenever the intuitive wisdom was present, there was a solid peace that came with it.
I was beginning to feel confident with the good results I had gotten from several prior experiences, to trust this type of directive. Sure enough, eating the hard boiled egg helped me turn a corner in multiple ways.
As I practised listening to and following the directives of my intuition in regards to what and when I should eat, I also practised harnessing this ability when creating recipes. I would intuitively sense the exact amounts of individual ingredients and from there, what foods would blend well with what. Two criteria were needed for foods to blend well together. They had to taste good together as well as work synergistically to create more vitality, rather than less.
I began to intuitively sense that certain foods would build up my immune system and others would tear it down. Some foods would seem to bring more energy and life to my body while others seemed to be difficult for my body to process.
Understanding: Different Diets Suit Different People
Foods that required more work for my body to process, would delay my healing. This was when I first began to see and understand that there is no one diet that is good for all people. There are however, types of foods that provide essential nutrients that act as catalysts so the body can be revitalized to perform to its ability towards healing, repair and regeneration.
The more I listened, the more ingredients and recipes would flow into my mind. In time recipes became more and more refined and I began to see how important it was to use high density nutritious foods, rich in phytochemicals and kept mostly raw so the enzymes were intact, to optimally nourish my body.
In time, when people saw me with vitality again, they wanted to know what I was doing. People asked for the recipes and then wanted lessons. I began writing the first edition of RawSome Recipes and teaching "hands on" workshops in 1996.
Over the years I have taught thousands of people worldwide through workshops, books, videos, nutrition seminars and internet how to eat health promoting RawSome Recipes (mostly raw with some cooked PURE and nutrient dense foods).
By practising on my own body and those who wanted to try what I was learning, I experienced first hand what an amazing miracle our bodies are if we provide the right fuel for them to run on.
Like a car, if we fuel it with high grade gas and change the oil, we will have a smoother, longer ride than if we filled the vehicle with the cheaper imitation.
The purer the better!
In my quest for recovery and my passionate pursuit for wellness, I stumbled upon a deep well of insight and an intuitive knowing, that surprisingly healed a hidden aspect of me that was unbalanced my whole life. That aspect was my relationship with food.
My Relationship With Food
I didn’t have a healthy relationship with food. I didn’t understand how powerful it was. I had lost respect for it and wanted to use food to mask my pain and feelings of powerlessness.
I wanted food to replace my boredom and fill the gaps for my desire to love and be loved. In wanting to use food, I got into the vicious cycle of being both addicted to it and controlled by it. I was out of balance not just physically but I was acting out emotionally in my relationship with food. It took getting poisoned and being so levelled for me to begin to understand.
After spending so many days of my life, really ill and unable to function, it is so glorious to have my spunk back. I also spent way too much wasted time over-focused on weight loss. I have replaced counting calories, binging and guilt with a joy and delight for Pure Unrestricted and Restricted Eating (intermittent fasting) as a lifestyle.
I have learned life-changing things about intuitive eating and intuitive cooking. As I have gotten reacquainted to food through the practice of listening to my intuition, all kinds of wonderful benefits and opportunities have opened up. Getting to have a new, creative relationship with food has brought forth much freedom and creativity. The beauty of that is it can be applied to so many things.
In the years I have been in and around the raw food movement, I notice that people tend to glamorize, spiritualize, biblicize, and fantasize raw food cuisine! I just want to normalize the preparation and ingestion of raw foods into the every day lives of busy, on-the-go people.
Don't Make Food Your Religion, Make It Your Wisdom
Making wise, informed food choices can clearly impact our energy, clarity of mind, and immune systems. I don’t believe that people are “more spiritual” or better because they eat raw food. I also don’t think being all-raw is necessary. In fact I have met several 100% “raw people” whose health has suffered because their diet was unbalanced.
Now that I know how to listen to my body for what I need, the issue isn’t so much about being raw or vegan, it’s about living PURE. We need to assess whether the foods we ingest have the necessary nutrients that our individual bodies are able to metabolize and use as fuel. By developing INTUITIVE EATING , we become more sensitive in noticing what foods act as catalysts to enhance our immune systems and state of health. Bottom line, PURE foods are essential for health and vitality.
Conquering A Love Of Food, I Found The Love Of My Life
I met my husband, Geoff in the summer of 2011.
Both in our fifties and divorced after marriages spanning over twenty years, who knew we would meet at this stage of life, be so compatible on every level and be able to share our mutual delight for all things related to living a healthy PURE lifestyle?
Little did we know that we would be married, move from California (bringing only 2 suitcases each) to living our dreams in the magical Highlands of Scotland, in just over a years’ time.

About Geoff Randolph
Geoff grew up in California and has been interested in healthy eating most of his life.
As a child he was overweight, as a result of eating the standard American processed food diet of the 60s. When he had to start hitting strict weight targets for his high school wrestling, Geoff began his passion for understanding, how what we eat affects the way we look, feel and exist in our bodies.
For ten years, Geoff lived on a ranch in the remote mountains of Northern California, where he learned to be self sufficient and grow a large amount of his fruits and vegetables, as well as raise chickens, goats, hogs, rabbits and sheep.
Geoff's background includes a degree in engineering and vast experience working in the high tech and laser industry in Silicon Valley.
Geoff is an avid researcher and passionate writer on the topics of diet and nutrition. His favourite food choice is kale and he is fast becoming an expert on cruciferous foods, intermittent fasting and interval strength training.
