Maybe something unexpected happened.
Maybe you got some shattering news.
Are you tragically grieving the loss of a love one?
Or sadly you may be in a stressful or toxic relationship…
There is no getting around the fact that in times of emotional pain our body undergoes stessors that we can’t always control.
One place this stress manifests is in our inablity to sleep. Stress affects not only our sleep but our hormones as well.
Why Sleep Is Key For Weight Loss
Leptin and Ghrelin
Leptin and gherlin are two hormones that play an important role in stimulating and suppressing appetite. Whereas ghrelin is released by the stomach and stimulates your appetite, leptin is produced by fat cells and is responsible for the suppression of hunger. When you are lacking sleep, levels of leptin in your blood decreases which then increases the level of ghrelin. The result is an increase in appetite. The opposite is true as well. The more sleep the better!
Cell regeneration, reproduction and growth are all stimulated by growth hormones. During sleep, your pituitary gland secretes more growth hormones than during your waking hours. Typically higher levels of growth hormones corresponds with having a heightened metabolism. As we age growth hormones deminish. Intermittent fasting as well as intense exercise can boost growth hormone levels.
Lack of sleep increases the level of cortisol in your blood. The higher the cortisol the lower your metabolism. Cortisol stimulates the break down of protein into glucose. Too much glucose in your body, will get stored as fat. Too much cortisol impairs your body’s ability to build muscle mass. Low cortisol levels in your blood is essential if you are trying to lose weight. Getting enough sleep could be the very piece of the weight loss and pooch belly puzzle, that is missing for you.
Rest and Recovery
Sleep is how your body rests and repairs. When you sleep your appetite is suppressed and your metabolism increases. If you interrupt this rhythm it can be like a domino, throwing so much out of balance.
When we are tired and hungry we don’t have the same patience and bandwidth to deal with planning and fixing meals. When we are emotionally stressed and not sleeping well, we are more susceptible to eating on the go and being all over the board with overeating and comfort eating. When people are stressed they tend to lean on sugar and coffee to prop themselves up and to compensate for their lack of sleep and energy.
Unhealthy eating habits can result in unconscious weight gain, stomach upsets, food that is not digested properly, constipation and inflammations (like what happens as a result of leaky gut). Inflammation is at the root of most disease and if you are not sleeping properly then your body does not get the chance to rest and repair.
